How the History Trail Works
- Where: 17 historic sites throughout Warren County
- When: Saturday, November 7, 2026 and Sunday, November 8, 2026, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day
- Cost: Free
The trail is split by region. Sites in the northwest part of the county open on Saturday, and sites in the southeast part of the county open on Sunday. Each stop is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on its assigned day, and each one has a docent on hand to share the history of the place. Printed trail maps are available at every location, and the organizers also post a map and guide online so you can plan a route before you leave the house. The event runs rain or shine.
One note from the organizers: because of ongoing construction, Bread Lock Park will not be open for visits on trail day.
Saturday, November 7: Northwest Sites
- Sites: Millbrook Village, Van Campen Homestead, Vass Farmstead, Blairstown, Johnsonburg, Moravian Village of Hope, Ramsaysburg Homestead, Belvidere, White Township and the Van Nest Hoff-Vannatta Farm
- When: Saturday, November 7, 2026, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday is the day for the river valley and the Delaware Water Gap side of the county. Millbrook Village, inside the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, is a re-created 1800s community where docents show what daily life looked like for the families who lived there. In Hope, the village founded by Moravian settlers in 1769, the Hope Historical Society is running Moravian lantern tours: self-guided by day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., then guided tours following the luminaries from 3 to 6 p.m., with lectures at 1 and 2 p.m. and a new cemetery tour with ghost stories. A suggested donation of $20 for adults applies to the Hope tours, and children 12 and under are free.
At the Ramsaysburg Homestead, the Fall Festival runs alongside the trail from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with local apples and cider pressed on site, honey samples, locally grown grains and flour, crafts, demonstrations and a bake sale.
Sunday, November 8: Southeast Sites
- Sites: Rutherfurd Hall, Hackettstown Historical Society Museum, Shippen Manor, Heritage Museum at Meadow Breeze Park, Roseberry-Gess House, Shimer Mansion and Historic Asbury
- When: Sunday, November 8, 2026, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday shifts to the southeast side of the county. Shippen Manor in Oxford, a c.1754 iron master’s residence, is hosting a REV250 program with the 2nd NJ Helms Co., featuring military history, exhibits, interpretations and firing demonstrations between noon and 3:30 p.m., plus activities for kids and adults. Rutherfurd Hall in Allamuchy and the Hackettstown Historical Society Museum round out a day that pairs easily with lunch in downtown Hackettstown.
Tips for Planning Your Route
Pick one day and one region, then group sites that sit close together so you spend more time inside the buildings and less time in the car. Start early if you want to see more than four or five stops, since many sites have guided talks and demonstrations that are worth staying for. Wear shoes that can handle gravel paths and old floors, and bring a little cash for bake sales and donations at the smaller museums.
