What Duke Farms Is
James Buchanan Duke, founder of the American Tobacco Company and Duke Power, began buying land along the Raritan River in 1893. His daughter, Doris Duke, made the estate her main residence and created Duke Gardens starting in 1958.
Today Duke Farms is a center of the Doris Duke Foundation. After a major renovation, it opened to the public in May 2012 as a model of environmental stewardship, with restored habitats that support bald eagles, great blue herons and more than 200 kinds of birds.
Hours and Getting There
Address: 1112 Dukes Parkway West, Hillsborough.
Hours: Trails and the Orchid Range are open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The campus is closed every Sunday and Monday for wildlife and ecosystem recovery.
Start at the Orientation Center in the historic Farm Barn, open Thursday through Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm, to pick up a map. Groups of 12 or more must submit a request form at least two weeks ahead.
The Orchid Range
The Orchid Range is a favorite cold weather stop, warm and green when the fields outside are bare. It is open whenever the trails are open, so it fits easily into any weekday or Saturday visit.
Go early in the day for the quietest visit and the best light through the glass.
Trails and Landmarks
About 20 miles of trails loop through the property, connecting landmarks including the Great Falls, the Coach Barn, the Hay Barn, the Meditation Garden and the Research Woods.
Duke Farms also offers geocaching and a biking page with guidance for riders. The free Duke Farms app gives turn by turn directions to landmarks, and a Digital Guide adds background on each stop.
Farm Barn Cafe
The Farm Barn Cafe serves Thursday through Saturday, with posted hours of about 9:30 or 10 am to 3 pm. It is the place to grab coffee before a walk or lunch afterward.
The cafe posts occasional closures on the Duke Farms site, including a closure on November 12, 13 and 14, so check before planning a meal around it.
Wildlife and the Eagle Cam
Duke Farms is a well known birding spot, and bald eagles nest on the property. If you cannot visit, the Eagle Cam on the Duke Farms website streams the nest.
Bring binoculars in winter, when bare trees make birds easier to spot along the lakes and meadows.
Tips for a Winter Visit
- Remember the campus is closed Sundays and Mondays, a common surprise for weekend visitors.
- Dress in layers and wear waterproof shoes; trails can be muddy after rain or snow.
- Pair a walk with the Orchid Range for a warm break.
- Check the hours calendar before holiday weeks, when schedules can shift.
Who Will Love It
Duke Farms suits nearly everyone: walkers who want long loops without traffic, photographers chasing winter light on the lakes, birders hoping for an eagle, and families who want an easy afternoon outdoors. The Orchid Range is a calm stop for anyone who prefers a shorter visit.
History fans can read the estate’s story in its barns and landscape, from James Buchanan Duke’s original farm to Doris Duke’s gardens.
Make a Day of It in Hillsborough
Hillsborough has plenty to add to a Duke Farms visit. Abma’s Farm on Amwell Road hosts holiday events through December, Carriage Farm on Clerico Lane is home to Flounder Brewing and Bellemara Distillery, and the Sourland Mountain Preserve on East Mountain Road offers rugged hiking for a second outing.
